Summer Term

I know it has been a long time since I updated this blog! I believe the second term of the program was the busiest one, in terms of so much new information, and also the major development on our work.
We had some highlights such as the visit of Miguel Sousa, that gave us a workshop on FDK. It was very instructive though demanding lots of attention. We finished that week with a very nice barbecue at my house. And right after that we went to the trip to the Netherlands, where we visited museums, met with Fred Smeijers, and other ex students from Reading. In the meantime we also met the students of Type Media at KABK in the Hague. It was really nice to hang out with them. We actually met Miguel again because he was there for the workshop with them. Also met with Marina Chaccur, and it's really nice to be able to talk your own language for a while as we did!

After Amsterdam I went to Dortmund and Dusseldorf. Really different landscape!
So I guess this was until reaching Reading again a very busy time, but now we are more relaxed from the trip, working at our own paces, spending lots of ours in the department working, but also standing in the sun. And after the Royal Wedding I guess things can go back to normal!
Our typefaces are still under development and everyday we go back to them, to the old ones and redo them, once more! MATD is an opportunity in a lifetime, very fulfilling, and it's amazing when, by now you feel you learned a lot, the work goes faster, you are more free with the outlines, the flow much better! The future olds good things like choosing a name for the typeface, that will be fun!

Trip to the Netherlands - Easter Break

Every trip starts with a train, this one from Brussels to Antwerp.

At Gerard Unger's house, where he so generously had us!

Really nice antique bookshop in Amsterdam, amazing book design!

First week of the second term

Hello again,

After coming back to Reading from really nice vacations the work waited us here! Though I did some work on my typeface and on my dissertation proposal, the pressure was different. As soon as I entered my house in Reading I got back on working mode. First having finished the dissertation proposal about the devanagari script, hopefully with a new approach, more graphic one I guess.
That was due this first week and at the same time we had Gerard's visit of the month, what made us work on our designs like crazy to show him something to work on! And we did, it was a very intense week but very productive. Right now it's saturday and I'm still hangover from the week, and as he said we should forget our designs for a while! Well but not too much, because they came to us in our sleep!
During the week, we get home really tired, and our eyes tired of the computer, so one night I decided just to use brush and pencil. That's what came out. As we can see we started working on the italic.

Homework

Just before going on christmas break I found in the library this really sweet book, called, Learn Kannada in 30 days, a very small and old book. I will give it a try, but I can't promise anything!
